Looks like the pendulum can only swing in a single direction to a limited extent :)

>This problem only exists because of the marketing move to call anything even slightly ML related "AI". We need to remember what "Artificial Intelligence" actually means. It refers to the field of research starting in the 1950's developing algorithms related to combinatorial search, planning, and reasoning. Machine Learning isn't AI in the sci-fi movie sense, but it's among the topics you'll find in a textbook like R…

That isn't how we break up the field of AI. ML are the algorithms that are based on statistics and other numeric methods. The other algorithms are based on logic and perhaps some philosophical methodologies. We don't really have a name for that second group, its just part of AI. Then there is Reinforcement Learning which is a sub-field of ML and incorporates a Pavlovian methodology. AI is the sum of all of these grou…

I'm not sure if your comment disagrees with mine. I think we agree that machine learning is a sub-field of artificial intelligence. Evidenced by the fact that Russell and Norvig, the most authoritative textbook on the subject, includes multiple chapters on ML.

AGI isn't a well-defined concept. So when people say something isn't "real AI" because it's not AGI, I can't take them seriously because they're implying that everything the field has worked on for the past 70 years isn't real AI.

If you believe AI is so incredibly useful.. then actually you should be happy to reap the advantages of it whilst the "anti" crowd buried their heads in the sand. I have seen people on this forum unironically ask what AI can't do. As if they have genuinely tried yet failed to plumb the depths of its ability. If I had a genie in a bottle then I would simply make wishes and not worry about correcting the record. Whereas if people are using a broke genie to create slop that inconveniences me I'd be upset. So a better question is.. if you there is nothing this genie can't do why aren't you quietly churning out masterpieces

They care that the product works. How can you guarantee that it works though?…

>because it's true I mean, it's just as true that most teams “write bad code,” “introduce bugs,” “create technical debt,” or something along those lines. There is this amazing thing that happens where when we talk about AI code, it's always compared against some idealized infinitely capable professional following every best practice, purposefully and carefully crafting every line. Which is fantasy. Most of you are cr…

Yes, there have always been bad programmers. The only difference is that now thanks to AI anybody can be a bad programmer. You've got people out there contributing sloppy code like only a bad "10x engineer" could do before. Good code is still hard to write, and from what I have seen in 3 companies so far, the people who write good code with AI are pretty much the same ones that were writing good code before AI.

> Let’s face it: by the time I manually ship version 1.0 of a product, the AI-assisted version could have been deployed 10x faster. Show the receipts. Where are the mobile apps, the photoshop replacements, the video and audio editors, the games and game engines that took a decade to make in the past that have shipped since Claude code came along? > By then, enough real-world feedback would have surfaced to identify t…

Photoshop alternatives already exist and are cheap or free, like Affinity. Why create a Final Cut Pro alternative when it’s so cheap from Apple? Many existing apps can be mostly cloned by a small team over 6 months or a year, but the challenge is finding customers willing to switch. You still need to add something new and useful, then reach customers somehow.

How confident are you this is true?

"Many existing apps can be mostly cloned by a small team over 6 months or a year,"

I have a vision of re-imagining stuff that is currently done across 5 apps, done within one that is far simpler and with favourable economics. Most people wont figure this kind of stuff out - it requires a lot of imagination. And if done in stealth - the incumbents will be fcked.

My belief is that we are gonna see a lot of consolidation - things that used to be done across multiple apps within one. Whilst at the same time a rise in apps that do one thing really really well - think of it as being closer to the ideal product where people current face a mismatch cost. This will remove the existence of most 'general' apps - which is a good thing imo.

Its divided because its the first time the previously more class unaware techbros have been critically challenged by the consequences of their actions - oh shit we might lose our jobs. 10 years ago "Disrupting X" was seen as a good thing. Now its come for them its a different story.

100% this. Disrupting and killing the jobs of others is good. Now that we are killing our own jobs, disruption is not so good anymore.

100%? So everybody who has any negative opinion of or experience with AI is now a "tech bro" who believes killing jobs is good? That's hideous. Why even have an HN account if you harbor this kind of black-and-white hate against people in software? You shouldn't want HN to look like the rest of the internet (flame wars, petty back-and-forth rhetoric, immaturity, etc).

AI has a lot of uses and can save people time.

But AI bots are filling online forums with garbage posts. I get so annoyed when reading a question and then see clues that it is not a real person but an AI asking so it can get training data for itself. If nothing is done then Dead Internet Theory will become a reality in 2 years.

If people just wanted to make their own stuff and have fun, that's fine. Knock yourself out. However, it's launched this enormous tidal wave of mediocrity that emboldens the dumbest people to do the dumbest shit and make it my problem. I just had to yell at one of the IT guys for trying to hook up our Duo to Claude, and I'm still mad about it lol.

Is it this: GitLab Duo Agent Platform with Claude accelerates development [1]? Well, Gitlab itself promotes hooking them up! [1] https://about.gitlab.com/blog/gitlab-duo-agent-platform-with...

No, Duo as in Cisco Duo IAM.

It was a "please do not fuck around with a central pillar of our security infrastructure just because you can" thing lol.

It's in the name "Hacker News". Hackers are people who enjoy doing the programming themselves, because they get satisfaction from it. Often they program in their spare time, and sometimes what they develop has little to no practical value, and is done as a learning exercise. Using AI would defeat the purpose for them. If they're forced to use AI in their job, it decreases their job satisfaction. There are others who…

I agree with everything you said including this:

>That is not hacking.

OTOH it is kind of like letting AI do the hacking that the user can not do :\

Not even real hackers sometimes, which can be pretty disruptive considering the particular crowd persuasion.

Which looks like it's happening when AI can find so many code vulnerabilities that previously required mainly some kind of real hacking ability.

Stupid people are always going to do stupid shit. I don't think that makes the enabling technology the problem & the anger towards it is misdirected. >trying to hook up our Duo to Claude ngl that is hilarious

Yeah, but the idiots had to put in effort before, which was difficult for them for obvious reasons.

Now they have a cheerful idiot robot who can actually do the idiot things they dream up and it tells them how brilliant they are.
