I always have this question: when applying to jobs (software related for me), the applications always asked whether I have been a government employee. Why do they ask about this? Does working for the government affect something?

Just a guess: if you've ever worked for the government, there's some record of it (maybe including performance, any issues they had with you etc). On the off chance the FBI doesn't know about those records already, they get a lead on getting those records.

Your post says remote but then when I open EF I see the standard cohorts(though growing!). 1. Do you expect the upcoming cohorts to be remote? 2. As far as I understand, in EF people meet and play around with ideas for a few months. The idea and team qualifies for the seed and then they eventually do a demo day. Which part of this is remote?

Thanks for checking it out. On 1) we still expect founders to relocate (to the chosen location) in the long-term once it's reasonably practicable and safe for you to do so. But given the current situation that date is uncertain 2) Pretty much all of it. So far our European cohorts are going fully remote since April and we have already hosted 2 Demo Days remotely. Remote Demo Day seems to be the new normal across other accelerators too.

Whats the plan now? I keep hearing everywhere that coming out of a recession is the best time to start a company. Maybe not now but 8 to 12 months from now. I think they have ~30 people in a cohort. Speed Dating / Finding someone to work with for the next five years at least(startups require time) over Zoom seems ambitious.

Depends on the type of company you are trying to build. In the end, it will still going to be hard, but the crisis has pointed out some serious gaps across numerous industries that can be acted on. As a rule of thumb though, if everyone is talking about sector/tech/industry X being the next big thing, you are probably already a few months/years too late.

Reg cohort size, our cohorts are around 80-90 people with founders coming from a diverse set of industries and tech backgrounds. I agree with you though, it is ambitious and we are certainly looking for people who are courages enough to do it.

Just out of curiosity, with such a short list of countries you don't hire in, why do countries like Mexico, Italy, Sweden, and Spain make it on the same list as North Korea?
