Contract or part-time

Location: Africa

Remote: yes

Willing to relocate: yes, to any location in Africa, where i can get the necessary permission to live and work.

Technologies: Linux, Fullstack, System Administration.

Résumé/CV: on request (software development, CTO, mentoring, training, fluent in English and German)

Like a recent Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31518945], I am looking for similar work. I am a European software developer who has lived and worked on four continents. Now it's time to move on and so i am looking to relocate to Africa.

While i could find a job elsewhere i believe that the experience living in an area where my work is going to have an impact gives me a better understanding of the needs of the location i am serving. Whether it is through direct contact with clients and users or just by being part of a local community and learning about the reality of living there.

I have more than a decade of experience running a company, doing software development, support and training and mentoring adults and students, as well as working on educational projects, and i am willing to take on a mixture of roles as needed to support a project.

20+ year journeyman developer.

I never really wanted a job, but to build things that make money. I've tended to prioritize my own projects over seeking new freelancing / consulting engagements, and as a result I'm afraid my background may look a little funky.

For the past several years I was obsessed with implementing an idea for a novel computing concept where all HCI is message-based, and all logic is developed 'lazily' over time, to automate real user stories. Unfortunately this work was unfunded and complicated by the throes of real life, and I've decided (once more) to cast it aside and focus on paying work / survival. I changed tack, stack, and scope too many times. I burned out to the point of complete inability to work, repeatedly. I burned business partners. I burdened my family. I still feel like it's really important, but I just cannot continue. Not like this.

I'm an American expat residing near Medellín, Colombia, but I would like to migrate to Portugal as soon as possible.

I'm hoping to earn $100 per hour, and work 24 hours per week (4 days * 6 hours).

I'm most comfortable with Javascript, but for the past year I've been writing Go and Qt QML. My favorite language is Elm, but I've never had the pleasure of using it professionally for more than a small project, and sadly I don't see it as very practical.

I can get into just about anything, and would love a novel problem to work on.

Please give me an opportunity. My email is in my profile.

Hello! I'm a Backend Engineer / Staff Engineer with 16 years experience that loves to be a key contributor to great products, and solve particularly unusual or large-scale technical challenges.

Here are some career highlights from work I’ve been lucky enough to have been involved in:

  * Scaled a social/dating app and associated AWS infrastructure up to 20 million+ users.
  * Built an instant messaging system (chat), with billions of messages that are persisted permanently using Cassandra.
  * Architected a video live-streaming platform that also streams "hidden" GoPro telemetry from the raw MP4 footage.
  * On a ride-hailing app, collaborated with multiple engineering teams to extract a startup monolith into a microservices based platform that facilitated hundreds of operational staff.
Strong preference to jobs that offer relocation to the US. No recruiting companies, direct opportunities only.
