Humans are better than AI at flagging AI and where they fail is where the content doesn't cause a "disgust" signal - so wouldn't it be useful instead to have a flag as AI feature?

How would any new user earn karma in that system? How would any story get upvoted? Again, this system can only work if there are at least _some_ people that are willing to upvote newbies and read new posts. Filtering is a valid form of improving signals. If there there was a reliable heuristic for users posting low effort content that was better then the user would be considering that instead. My system has been working pretty well: using some extension or another that has mute functionality, if I see a person post an extremely low quality comment, I look at their comment history for two or three pages. If there is no comment of value in that set, I mute the user. The board gets better each day.
Eventually HN is going to need to charge people $1 to post, just for spam filtering. Maybe donate the money to open source or something.

I have long believed that whatever comes along to replace the reddit/HN etc type site will be based almost entirely on trust networks. i.e. only surface stories posted by or upvoted by those you trust, and the inverse with those you distrust. Then exponentially drop off trust transitively and it could be almost workable.
The risk is to build very good echo chambers. One shouldn’t have to read AI slop or despicable opinions during their free time, but some exposure to alternative respectable and not idiotic views should be part of the design.

I sometimes feel like a paid newsletter that's curated by users would be fun. I'd happily pay €5 a month for a weekly/daily digest where the comments are en par with HN.

This problem can be solved by an invite/vouch for system. New account can be invited or vouched for by an old account with good karma. If an account that you vouched for starts spamming and/or slopposting, you lose your vouching for abilities for a period of time or forever.
I didn't know anybody here before I joined. (I have been here for a few years, and I still don't know anybody here.) How would a person like me get invited or vouched?
