no, 100% no on this -- we have computers that can compute for us, and we have since the 50s

the problem that this company is perpetuating is the idea that humans need to learn how to compute, we don't

we need to learn how to identify that a problem we're facing has a mathematical solution and how to translate the problem into an equation that a computer can solve for us

Computation is quite important to understanding a problem. Often a more complex problem requires the ability to do simple computation and to build a intuition about numbers. Especially when we are talking things like simple fractions or rearranging basic equations. When a kid hasn't gotten a good grasp of fractions, they struggle to see why we can multiply both sides of an equation by x/x and then move things around…

Your "problems" are just equations. 3x = 2 is not a problem.

Here's a problem: you and a friend have 15 dollars and would like to enjoy a day at the movies. Movie tickets cost $7.50. Will you have any money to spend on concessions?

The equation that you'd hope a child would produce is something like 7.5 x 2 = 15. And 15-15=0. Ultimately, no there's no money left over for concessions. That's the skill we need to teach. After that whether or not they know how to _compute_ 7.5 x 2 isn't a big deal. Give them a calculator.

It's crazy how indoctrinated we all are thinking equations are problems and teaching kids how to compute is "learning math".

It's disrespectful to candidates time to play misdirection games like this. If the form wasn't put up to mislead people, it would be different. There's a reason most places don't do stuff like this. The problem isn't the extra 30 seconds requires to open gmail, the problem is the kind of immature culture it signals.

Sorry for breaking the rule, but IMO but this rule is kind of ridiculous. Are you at all concerned about job posts containing blatant falsehoods being allowed to persist on the site without comment?

The rule prevents the job threads, which large numbers of users find highly valuable, from falling apart into long threaded debates. Nothing prevents you from writing a post about the blatant falsehoods in a job posting here and submitting it as its own story. You just can't do it on these threads. This is an old rule, it markedly improved the Who's Hiring threads, and it's unlikely that this particular company's story is going to change it. (But I'm just a rando that knows the history here.)

Does U.S. Permanent Resident status (about a year until I become a citizen) count, or citizenship is required (like for ITAR regulations and such).
