Materialize ( https://materialize.com/ ). Although a bit known here, my coworkers never heard about it. I think it's going to be a game changer.

https://ipfs.io/ seems pretty cool. I've been meaning to check it out, but not seen any uptake yet.

I want to see a variation of Signal to add BlogPost like interface.

It could then use IPFS to host "Public Facing" posts. People could pin - or pay for pinning - their posts.

IPFS is what I hope will lead to further democratization of the internet.

Declarative is awesome for bootstrapping an infrastructure from nothing, but once it’s running and people are depending on it, it actually matters a lot which operations are done to it, in what order, and with what dispersion in time. Doubly so if it’s stateful. In the real world we see either hints in the “declarative” config to tweak execution order, or procedural workflows expressed ad hoc as a sequence of goal states. I think the future of sysadmin will be more explicitly procedural. Services managing services through the normal building blocks of services: endpoints, workers, databases, etc.

1) Fiducials. This makes it so incredibly easy to map the physical world to the digital world, and vice versa. I guess it’s not under the radar, but it just feels like such a superpower. Natural feature tracking is cooler. I mean.... little black boxes are alright but just establishing that a bespoke 3D shape or hierarchy of shapes to orient your targeting looks less crappy and has a lot more interesting potential.

One time many many years ago I went to kinkos and printed giant fiducial squares like 48"x48" and wheat pasted them all over Austin, TX to do large at scale AR with markers. Just putting giant dongs on down town condos and stuff. Good times.

Old tech. New software development is 99% aimless churn. We don’t need more new tech. We need better applications of old tech. There is so much software that works perfectly fine already. What’s missing is connecting it to real world problems.

Your post is about software, but it applies pretty well for hardware. Like looms. Robotics is actually generally pretty slow. Regular (serial) robot arms are usually significantly slower than a human arm. Some parallel robots (ie where the motors are mostly stationary and don’t have to be waved around by other motors), like a SCARA or Delta robot, can go about 2-3x the speed of a human, but the difference isn’t massi…

The potential with arms and other humanoid robotics is to be able to plug them into existing processes without having to make massive structural changes. Robot arms in car factories look like an evolution from a human production line, rather than a completely redesigned production line (or a mashup of the two). Still, redesigning the production around the robot still makes good sense: consider a dishwashing android vs a regular dishwashing machine. We have had dishwasher tech for a long time but we are still very far from a dishwashing android. It's just that maybe that humanoid robot could also hang up the laundry, look after the kids, drive you to the supermarket etc. There is so much room to grow in the "hard automation" space, where scale makes having specialized machines doable - as opposed to a household having to buy a dishwasher, washing machine, roomba, etc.

I'm not sure this is exactly under the radar but I'm excited about wearable AR. No it doesn't look real but once you get past that we have some amazing tech on the horizon. Microsoft and Oculus have hands free controls that actually work. Inside out tracking is progressing quickly. New UX patterns are getting forged. I'm exited to see what we'll have in a few years time. In my mind its far more exciting than somethin…

Any specific devices? Or just generally the brands of oculus & microsoft?

The Quest2 packs a ton of power into a very comfortable headset. While not designed for passthrough, its still quite functional.

The Hololens opens up an entirely new UX flow with accurate enough hand tracking and the ability to keep your hands free to operate a keyboard or any other kind of device.

It would seem like the attack vector for this technology is SUPER simple to pull off. How do you trust self-driving cars that use this in a world where graffiti exists?

There are so many simpler attacks against human-driven cars that could be pulled off even easier today, and yet, they're not pulled off.

Physical world has a much different threat model than the Internet.

Data Hubs. It’s queriable like a database but it doesn’t store your data - it proxies all your other databases and data lakes and stuff, and let’s you join between them. Trino is a great example.

What about attaching normal cars with "beacons" that ping every 5ms? Cheaper?

You'd need, what, 50 years of enforcement before you'd have enough cars on the road to trust it, and then of course what happens if its broken? What about pedestrians?
