Does your project need logos and/or art?

"Oh I'll just use Midjourney," I hear some of you starting to think. Well.

Does your project need logos and/or art drawn by an actual human with twenty-five years of experience making Adobe Illustrator do things most people don't know it can do, and an understanding of the basics of what makes a usable logo and the multiple formats it needs to be delivered in? Or are you fine with something that makes people assume everything else next to the obviously AI-generated logo is probably also AI-generated, and thus not worth their time?

Or maybe you just want some cool art of your fursona to print out and hang on your wall. I can do that too.

Been in the IT field for ~20 years. In the past held a DoD clearance, worked at Three Mile Island for a while, ran all the IT in a small office, offered professional services for Mobile Device Management products, etc. Currently researching browser technologies from the past 25 years and brushing up on my C skills to contribute a substantial amount of code to an old browser that needs it. Sysadmin, QA, and Security interest me, but my best skill is being academic. If you have a technology where you can't just plug in somebody off the street, would love to hear from you.

Hello, my name is Jesse.

I'd describe myself as a competent generalist; a lifelong learner. I'm pretty much always working on something I've never done before in the context of one of a handful of long-running side-projects I have.

My most recent professional experience has been about a year at a semiconductor startup where I wrote prototypes for a functional simulator and a compiler.

One of my side-projects of ~10 years is a 3D game engine. Working on it has taught me a great deal about systems and graphics programming. It runs on Windows, Linux and Web (WASM/WebGL). I chose to build it without any libraries (barring the CRT for startup), which began as a learning exercise, but has taught me the value of simplicity.

In more recent history I've been working on a metaprogramming system for C. Think C++ templates/constexpr, but more flexible, and significantly more ergonomic. It turns out I have a small passion for compilers. I was also recently contributing to Oil, a new bash runtime and POSIX compliant shell.

That's the cliff-notes on my technical background. As a person I'm friendly and easy to get along with. I like the phrase "Have strong opinions, weakly held". Outside of work I enjoy surfing, backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, rock-climbing and beer! I split my time between Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

What I deliver: I develop line of business applications for SMEs, using a stack based on either Go+PostgreSQL or Python+MySQL (client chooses), both on Linux only. Windows development costs more.

Depending on complexity, I usually complete straightforward apps in 4-6 weeks and charge ~5000USD once-off although I have done LoB apps for clients who want to pay small amounts monthly instead (SaaS syndrome).

I am able to charge so little due to my proprietary framework that allows rapid enhancements in a semi-low-code manner. My clients all get the full source to the web app with a non-redistribution license so the client is free to extend and enhance the product I deliver with no further involvement on my side.

My entire value proposition is solving business problems both quickly and cost effectively in an easily maintain able manner.

If you need a LoB app quickly and cheaply without compromising quality I can accommodate you.

I have been in embedded development for most of the past 25 years. I have 8+ years of experience. Mostly backend-focused full-stack engineer. I enjoy working on high-scale systems that have a good impact, and require both efficiency and reliability, but I’m open to many options now.

I’ve taken about a year to explore different business ideas, but I don’t think any of them are going to work out, so I’m very interested in getting back to a more normal job. But, I did get more experience with native iOS Swift+SwiftUI development, making a really polished app that I use every day. Even though I am backend focused, I can contribute to whatever technical needs arise.

If I were going to relocate, I would see SoCal as a plus, but I’m open to the options.
