My advice is to go to meetup groups, conferences, and workshops where you can interact with others face-to-face. I just got back from React Rally in Salt Lake City, and I often attend Sacramento and SF Bay Area JS meetup groups. Find a group in your area, and you'll quickly pick up on current trends and recommendations.
