Canned beans are already cooked, so add them at the end to heat through. Or, start from dried beans, but it takes experimentation to get them to the desired texture.

I don’t know specifics of this dish but usually you want to cook everything else first and only add in the rice for the last 10 mins so it stays firm. The choice of rice matters too, basmati tends to stay separate. Also wash the rice first so excess starches get drained off.

I'll give that a try. Some recipes prepare the beans separately from scratch, and then pour the toasted rice into that already-seasoned liquid mixture.

I'll pick up some basmati today, during Day Three of the local Panamanian chili pepper search.

Today, I am revising Portuguese grammar and so I've mostly been exploring the things I can remember well and those that I can't. Portuguese has a lot of verb forms that I need to get right. But it also has really interesting constructions like "ir ter com" which literally means "to go to have with" but is an idiomatic way of saying "to meet up" (with someone) and I keep remembering and forgetting it.

People already do that. It also doesn't relate to the person you replied to, as I said in another comment, it's about an external source imprisoning you, not you imprisoning yourself.

It’s more so a realization that you have agency, choice, but have decided perhaps without much intention or thought, to remain in your status quo.

I don’t think it’s literally about flying. It’s about ignorantly complying to a status quo and how that itself is a decision even if you’ve made it unintentionally.

Again I think the resources it takes to fly being a limitation are not what it’s referring to. A bird just lives its life in an area and never really assesses if a flight to a far off land is possible, if resources would support their journey, or any of that. They just do what all the other birds are doing or of course what their instincts tell them to. We’ve ignored migration and birds that do travel great distances as not a part of this as it’s not a literal statement about flying!

Wait, can't you do that already?!

I'm in my 30s but we've had pretty much instant payments as long as I've had a bank account (20+ years) in the UK.

Starting with red beans from scratch is on my list. I was hoping to get 80% of the taste with 20% of the effort -- seems like a simple enough dish, after all -- but last night I was watching a video of a guy making his own coconut oil (not just milk) from fresh coconuts, and it's clear I'm going off the deep end.

Not in the US. It’s kinda why paypal, venmo, zelle exist. Filling a gap. Our banking system is quite backwards.
