I still use Google Search, but almost every search I perform includes `site:example.com`.

But even then, Google Search can still suck compared to Kagi, etc. For example, why do I not see relevant results for these searches?

https://www.google.com/search?q=inherit_errexit+site:www.gnu...

https://www.google.com/search?q=pipefail+site:www.gnu.org/so...

But I do see relevant results for the same searches using DuckDuckGo:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=inherit_errexit+site:www.gnu.org/s...

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=pipefail+site:www.gnu.org/software...

google does not break out search volume or search revenue. but YC companies have reported some 15% drop in referral traffic from google.

That sounds like an upper bar for any actual change bearing in mind (i) some of the referral drop will come from people happily still using Google but getting more of their answers from Google's AI slop at the top of the results page and less from clicking through to corporate blogs and (ii) YC companies tend towards targeting early tech adopters

agree

Gemini has been helpful directly but it could be more terse compared with ChatGPT.

Google search is decent at code examples but again too much text and not as concise.

It isn't just you. I really dislike the AI slop at the top of Google search results. It is an annoying distraction that forces me to scroll past every single time, multiple times a day. Bing is just as bad with its LLM although it is also a worse search engine.

You're in luck: if you just append "fuck" to any search, google doesn't generate the ai model response.

I still use Google frequently because the LLMs I've tried are bad at giving sources for claims, and there are some things I can't check by running them through a compiler.

Paid ChatGPT has had built in web search for over two years. If my question doesn’t automatically trigger a web search, I just type “verify that” and it brings up links.

I have replaced the default search engine in Chrome with ChatGPT. It automatically does a web search

1. Who are we ? 2. No, per Google's Q4 earnings, people are still using Google more than ever.

google does not break out search volume or search revenue. but YC companies have reported some 15% drop in referral traffic from google.

RIMs best quarters came after the iPhone was introduced.

I’m not saying Google is “doomed”.

This is some of the best advice I've ever received.
