I have a bit of a spiritual, but also actually a super practical take. Imo this whole situation finally liberates us from chasing things for personal gain, for result, being driven by selfish ego. And instead allows us to focus on what we really enjoy or find meaning in _doing_, for the sake of the process, not the outcome. Which is basically the definition of selfless action (karma-yoga) and is one of several paths…

This is all very well but how will I buy my groceries?

> I'm getting overwhelmed by AI. How to cope? Ignore it. The world may or may not be going to hell in a handbasket, but the being overwhelmed part is on you. If it's really immediately interfering with your ability to support yourself, and I mean immediately: Have you been laid off? Is some other aspect preventing you from maing the money to pay your rent? if not, follow the "Ignore it" advice above. If you really ar…

Firstly, remember the AI companies have something that is able to do interesting product demos but that is it. If I had a dog that could tell me what was happening in the world but got it wrong 5% of the time my response would be "Oh shit, a talking dog!" and then I would keep watching the news as normal. This is not going to get better: the energy demands are enormous, the amount of untapped data sets for consumptio…

> AI can do [intellectual work] well You are living in a radically different world than I am. AI-generated content is noticably shitty in almost every sphere. Improvement probably will come, but it's pretty damn far off from acceptable (let alone good) right now. Literally every time I've tried to use it for coding problems, it's hallucinated a non-existent function/option or given me something that _looks_ correct b…

Yeah, pretty much the same experience here. Prose or poetry, AI-generated text is awful. AI-generated images also tend to look awful unless they're obsessively-directed and processed. AI-generated music is still so bad it's hilarious. Some AI can kinda code, but only if you limit it to the purview of boilerplate generation. A lot of common APIs and libraries simply don't exist, in ChatGPT's head. I feel like as a pro…

And, conversely, it assumes the existence of a lot of APIs or libraries that it would be nice if they _did_ exist, but they don't (though, as I've seen someone else comment elsewhere - that's no bad thing if you view it as inspiration rather than gospel. You can ask the LLM "what function would make this task easier if it existed?", and then divert your attention to creating _that_ function instead).

In fairness - it's still a helpful tool which can provide leverage/acceleration for human-directed creation, and I do believe that the quality will improve drastically over the coming years. But we're still a long way off from the time when they can take the lead rather than be a tool.

> Honestly, I would suggest maybe talking to a therapist about these feelings

OP, please do not flippantly write this off - this is excellent advice for anyone (mental health is chronically undervalued), but _especially_ for someone who mired in despair and hopelessness as you seem to be (and as I was ~5 years ago). It might well be the best thing you ever do for yourself.

It's too late to edit this comment, but, on the theme of "Make yourself a Tech Lead of a bunch of (AI) developers" - this article[0] is a good explanation

Well, this is like saying why learn anything when there are thousands of experts out there who understand it better than you ever will.

Except there are only so many human experts to go around, whereas everyone can have their own personal AI expert, or a whole team of them.

Thanks both of you for your consideration, but I don't think it's something a therapist would resolve. I think it's just a matter of accepting the reality, which is a gradual process.

I think it's okay to do tasks that others (including AI) can do better and faster. For me personally, making art is as much of the process as the end product. I like to draw digital art and paint and make digital music. I find the activities therapeutic and a fun way to pass the time. Can AI do better? Sure. Do I care? No. I make the art for myself and the people I share it with. Another thing that helps is getting o…

I agree, my comment implied making a living from it. You can do things for the sake of doing things, that will always be the case. But will you be able to make a living from it that's another question and the answer is most likely no.

Whether or not therapy would help with _this particular_ problem (I happen to disagree with you, but that's neither here nor there), it remains one of the most beneficial and healthy things that a human can do for themself.
