I can Transform Your Legacy Codebase into a Valuable Asset

Hello. I am a consultant specializing in old and poorly documented code bases. I have been writing code for over two decades and have worked with over a dozen languages including: Python, Rust, golang, C, Java, Javascript, Typescript, Haskell, and Elm. I can dive into an unknown and poorly documented code base, document it, write tests and provide professional on-boarding videos to get your team up to speed. I provide comprehensive training and documentation to ensure your team can effectively maintain and enhance your legacy codebase long after our engagement is over. I can also diagnose, reproduce, and fix hard to understand bugs in complex systems. By bringing old code bases up to modern standards I can help you harvest the valuable IP assets you already have, driving new growth and stabilizing the technologies upon which existing revenue streams rely.

I work with companies of all sizes, from startups to established enterprises, who are looking to modernize their legacy codebases and improve their technology stack.

With my help, I can transform a stagnant legacy product into a proven technology which you can believe in and sell.

Past projects include:

- Updating and documenting a legacy telecom diagnostics system which processes hundreds of gigabytes of Netscoute data every day

- Upgrading [django-helpdesk](https://github.com/django-helpdesk/django-helpdesk) to use class based views and performing a security audit on accessible endpoints

- Migrating a mid sized organizations server infrastructure from a diverse set of hosts: EC2, Heroku, VPSes to a unified kuberentes cluster, implementing a fully automated and rollback friendly CI/CD system.

- Maintaining, developing and administering a large Django application used for a bike to work event

- Design and implementation of the POSIX device subsystem for Docker 1.0

- Diagnosing a critical and hard to reproduce bug in Elm-lang's runtime.

SEEKING WORK | US/California | Remote OK

Hi,

I'm a programmer looking for 1-4 week projects and open to extension, available immediately.

I've worked up and down the full stack for over two decades and am deeply familiar with Internet protocols and languages. My present technical focus is Python 3.7+/Flask, Bootstrap 5, ExtJS 2, and RasPi/Ubuntu. I'm minimal in my operations but only after getting deep and heavy handed with Java, Maven and Jenkins automation mid-career--cured of over-engineering as opposed to ignorant.

Historically I've worked with Clojure 1.7, Java 8/Maven 3, Adobe Flex 4/Air, iOS 4, C, PHP 5 and VB 6. I'm strong in Algorithms and Data Structures applied broadly, having built a streaming SQL engine for an analytics product as well as a chart library for the front end. My DevOps are solid, having worked with tools like Ansible, Docker and K8s and in five-nines reliable B2B SaaS environments.

Ideal project class would be greenfield MVP or operationalization of an MVP in preparations for a small junior team to take over, for example after an unexpected CTO exit. I'm long-term budget minded including time and opportunity--value focused.

Please email biz@harlanji.com if you'd like to discuss an opportunity.

Thank you,

Harlan

I love working on full-stack web development, however many projects I've worked on included maintaining/deploying backend Java/Python applications which I'm proficient at as well. SEEKING WORK - Remote, travel possible depending on location and duration.

Location: North-east UK

What I do: I take MVPs that you’ve outgrown and upgrade them to support the next stage of your growth.

There could be any number of reasons why your current system is holding you back. Wherever you’re starting to feel the pinch, the price of ownership is that you don’t have the luxury of saying “that part’s not my problem” or “I don’t get involved at that level.”

You won’t hear it from me, either.

20 years handling a wide variety of IT roles and projects mean that I can help through the whole process from high-level strategy right down to code, all based on a deep technical foundation.

In the past I've been a network engineer, run large-scale Debian installations doing devops before it had a name, and been responsible for servers in Antarctica. I have experience with a wide range of different Unix tools and technologies, at various levels of the stack. This gives me the ability—and the perspective—to pick the best combination of tools for any particular project, rather than simply treating everything as a nail because all I have is a hammer.

Buzzwords: Debian, Ubuntu, AWS, PostgreSQL, Clojure, Elixir, Perl, Raku, Common Lisp, Rust, Ruby, Go
