Hi! I'm Doug, a PhD Candidate at Michigan State University (defended May 11th, working on edits, degree expected this summer). I focus on understanding how neural networks process information using information-theoretic tools (my dissertation work is primarily in neuroevolution, although I have some ML/DL experience). I'm looking for an opportunity to apply my knowledge to solve problems in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or Deep Learning and to create intelligent systems.

Technologies: Rust, Python, sql, js, html, css, zsh / bash, linux, ansible, nginx, familiarity with many others. Strong in devops - I am self-taught and a very quick study, so I'm frequently building small projects out in new frameworks just to get a smell of things.
I discovered my love of engineering late in life, about 5 years ago, after a mercifully short military career and discovering that bar management wasn't interesting in the slightest. I would continue to code until I die regardless of whether there were money in it. I would be an unconventional hire - I'm probably best suited to an unconventional team. I'm looking for a more junior role. I am a direct communicator and a self starter.

I love doing this stuff, and have no desire to break that passion on a FAANG or in the defense or adtech industries. I would prefer to negotiate salary rather than compromise on culture.

I have plenty of experience working with SAAS products (designing from scratch or building upon an existing one), managing teams and working remotely as a full stack developer.

I'm on the process of selecting a new gig and I lean strongly towards part time/flexible hours positions.
