Some concrete examples: DDG-1000 Destroyer network, Grand Coulee Dam SCADA, ESO's Very Large Telescope optics control; Predator ground control station; PIMCO pre-trade compliance system. If the terms real-time, high-performance or distributed computing come to mind, you would be right.
