I'd say that they are more uncertain than industry jobs at this point, unless you're talking about companies that have recently been taken over by private equity where the new owners intend to gut the place and sell off the parts.

> unless you're talking about companies that have recently been taken over by private equity where the new owners intend to gut the place and sell off the parts. Off topic, but this is starting to feel like the rule rather than the exception. This practice should not be legal.

I worked for a compaby as the dev lead that was bought by private equity along with other smaller companies to eventually get big enough to go public.

I saw the writing on the wall. I knew it didn’t make sense to try to build a development department - what I was originally hired to do. I became more of an “enterprise architect” responsible for managing and coordinating third party consulting companies.

I left a year and half later and went to work for a startup. I left there abs when I was looking for a job three years later, the company that acquired the startup offered me a job as a staff architect responsible for integrating all of their acquisitions. As soon as I found out it was PE backed, I noped out.

I still inadvertently ended up at a PE backed company that also had a roll up strategy. It was shitty and I only lasted a year before moving on

I wouldn't be so sure considering what's happening with federal govt offices in the US right now..

state & local are always options

They also in danger now. Red states are trying to implement mini-DOGEs and all states have to rethink their budgets with the federal government cutting back.

One option is to find a job that has legacy work. A good place to look is a non-tech company. IE: a company that might use tech to run the business (which you will support), but tech isn't their main product. These companies tend be using older software because they aren't really required to have the latest and greatest.

A pretty safe option is working for a utility company.

I worked for a company whose customers were utility companies. We printed and mailed bills for them - basically a home grown bulk mail merge system. Later on we partially pivoted to supporting e-bills.

I worked there from 1999-2008. We didn’t even care about either the dot com bust, 9/11 or the housing market crash in 2008. The revenues stayed steady

Yeah, you can run into it anywhere. When I was in the pizza delivery business in my early 20s, once you got into management, there was very much an up-or-out mentality. You couldn't just be a really good assistant manager; you were pushed to move up to manager and then to a bigger store and so on. It just seems to bother the climbers to see someone content to stay in the position he knows he's best suited for.

I have a disability, so I'm stuck where I'm at.

And what happens when they let you go?

I also have a slight disability. Are you saying there is no other place in the US where you can work? Not even remotely?

Mine's a 10x dentist.

Your dental offices needs an hour for a routine teeth cleaning. Mine does it in six minutes. 10x, baby. I can't afford to waste my own precious 10x engineering time on sitting in a chair dealing with such a mundane affair. 10x all the things! Rather painful, though.

Apparently I’ve been a 30x dentist this whole time and never even knew. I can do a cleaning in 2 minutes flat.

> My point is to tell you that some people, in this crazy world, want to do some work, and some of that work is not fancy, and for that they get a special place in the current environment. And this is fine. It is good to recognize this and build around it. My comment and my annoyance is with the idea that the government is a good place to act as a, and I mean no offense, dumping ground for such people. The reputation…

> The reputation of government jobs being very stable attracts such people and they then form the majority and things stagnates and nothing improves because there is no will. This is substantiated entirely by feels . Do you actually know any government workers?

I'm only allowed an opinion on governments and government jobs if I personally know government workers? Do you know what "reputation" actually means?

This basically shows why DOGE is a thing. This sort of attitude is why governments are slow to achieve anything, why any government contract ends up over budget, etc... I await your downvotes.

Not every software project needs the mentality you want to stamp on it. Most software in the world is boring, stagnant, legacy code. Maybe it was 'hip' one time, no one cares... that's the reason we have tons of COBOL still running around... I am not here to tell you what we SHOULD do. Not to tell you who SHOULD get a job. My point is to tell you that some people, in this crazy world, want to do some work, and some o…

Honestly as I get older I find myself starting to look to that world in a more appealing light. Call it the tech version of Barrista FIRE but there's a certain appeal to getting a job crunching boring ass enterprise Java for some stupid company, getting a decent wage (relative to the rest of the country, not tech in general) and reasonable benefits.

Can you discern between genuine reputation and conservative propaganda?

I'll probably just work at Walmart or something. There are very few opportunities in my area for tech jobs and remote isn't the best fit for me. My wife isn't open to moving either.

If you can actually work in an office, what does your disability have to do with not being able to get another job? I can’t imagine a disability where you are mobile enough to go into an office but limits your ability to get another job.

Especially if you can work at Walmart where you have to stand on your feet and move stuff all day.

For reference: I have cerebral palsy that for all intents and purposes affects mostly my left hand. But standing all day in a retail job day in and day out would be detrimental because of a slight affect of CP on my left foot.
