Go to bed earlier at night.
To go to bed earlier 1) get up earlier 2) You can only shift your schedule about 1 hour per day. You can try shifting it more, but you're going to have sweater-head, nausea and hot flashes. If you go from getting up at 11 to getting up at 5, expect five days of feeling like crap. 3) The pineal gland is activated by light incident on the retina. So calculate when you need to go to sleep based on when you get up, and s…

I think you just lost your right to complain about comments that are shallow, flippant and/or do not bring any useful knowledge or argument to the table. Sleep is a serious subject with many intricacies and hacking one's sleep can have far-reaching consequences. By reducing it to a short soundbite you set out a bad example, and it will be followed with zeal - already it's been modded to 55. Sad.
Actually, the question has a simple and correct answer which is what PG provided. Just because sleep is a serious matter does not mean the advice/answer to the question must be complicated.
Answering the question is one thing, fostering good discussion is another. To foster discussion, both parties should understand each other. To help understanding, a question should not only be answered, but explained. An explanation is more helpful than a straight answer.
Make sense?

I don't know what Plato you've read. Most of his dialogues are very dense.
It's all a matter of context. The New England Journal of Medicine makes the Symposium read like Tom Clancy.

Wait, what? Plato is definitely heavy reading, and worth your full conscious attention! Don't waste Plato by reading him when you're about to fall asleep!

Unfortunately I sometimes wake up with no alarm going off, think to myself "hmm, where's the alarm? what time is it?", look at the clock and realize that it's 4 hours later than I intended and the alarm has been turned off. Since I have no recollection of turning off the alarm, it isn't really a matter of discipline :( Edit: Of course, I'm not suggesting that this is a deal breaker, or that I've 'given up', just that…
that's the case with me too. I can talk sense even while I'm fast asleep.
Stress factors a lot into it for me. If I'm having a good week hardly anything strange happens in my sleep.

#137There's no reason to get up early in the morning. This is one of those things like marathon running and vegetarianism. For totally irrational reasons people think they're doing something worthwhile just because doing it sucks.

My case is the exact opposite: I have a late-rising espouse and two kids (10 and 3). The younger one wakes at 6am and I have to take care of her. :-P
We don't have kids, yet. My fiancée just nags me until I get up.
