A famous copywriter Gary Halbert told his students if they were to compete with his hypothetical hot-dog stand, "I'll give you every advantage you ask for -- better hot-dogs, better prices, whatever...as long as I can get only one advantage. I want a starving crowd!"

Every week I stumble upon websites of software companies who are just as good as their more famous competitors (or even better), but their marketing sucks, and that's why they never reach the hockey-stick growth phase -- they never find their starving crowd.
