I've been trying to get my passion projects studio together...

1. I literally just put together a personal "Hunter" dashboard to help identify posts and topics that are relevant to my interests. The hunter is basically just a RSS crawler for keywords, scoring for relevant topics, and similar. It brought me here! Given that it was quick to toss together, I'm not surprised that other folks DM me on Reddit with "Hey, I found you..." spam.

2. A specialized app that consolidates unstructured audio into longer-term project notes like a project manager (check out my website if interested, it's free). I wanted something private/local that helped support people who’d rather talk through their work and end up with usable project history — status updates, decisions, blockers, progress over time — without hand-crafting every note.

3. Last week I polished my website and made a new "Observatory" landing page (https://www.watchlightstudio.com/)! It's a cool little space theme that shows folks what I'm working on, has dust/particle effects, and similar. I'm still finding my brand, and this was a fun opportunity to dip my does into .css

A fully open source operating system geared towards self-hosting: https://github.com/malmoos/malmo

There are some good options out there (umbrel, zima, etc) but none that are fully open source or that have the sinplicity that I am gunning for with this one.

The focus is making it one-click to run your own "life backup" (immich, nextcloud) and also host your own open source SaaS alternatives.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

There are 8 apps on App Store called Kakeibo that are money/finance trackers, none of which have your website logo.

interesting. without an account, from my browser, I can see it in the fifth place. are you searching from your phone, iPad, laptop...? but this checks out with my experience: extremely low visibility on the stores, I think I need to improve description/keywords and get more reviews. thanks for sharing!

Or aim for different channels since the name itself isn't unique enough.

I'm not sure I could click an App Store link on your page; either I couldn't, or I could and the button wasn't visible enough.

https://smarterplaylists.playlistmachinery.com/ Build complex Spotify playlists by wiring together components in a visual editor. Mix, filter, and sort tracks from any source (with Last.fm and Musicbrainz support). Combine multiple playlists, saved tracks, and recommendations. Filter by genre, audio features, popularity, and more. Schedule programs to keep playlists updated automatically.

5yrs ago, pre LLMs, I made a very simple version of this, create good playlists from a user query. Got me my first programming (& favourite) job at a music AI company to lead QA Automation, found a lot of bugs.

Only had basic python knowledge going in (new grad mech engineer on pumps/pipes). built on flask / python / heroic / GitHub.

Small team, some awesome people. Changed my life. for now, back to being laid off.

https://merrilin.ai , the best damned reading app for every platform with an AI chat that's spoiler safe by design. BYOB - bring your own books.

This is really cool. I'm working on a reading app too, but specifically for language learning. Upload an epub and get language annotations, that kinda thing.

Could we talk and exchange notes? I have a calendar link on my profile. Or I'd be glad to book something on your calendar if you could share.

https://motionparty.net/ - motion controlled web games, by analyzing the Webcam feed locally. In the vein of eye toys for ps2. Works quite well I think, but some elements need improvement. Want to add more games as well.

Wow, this completely crashes Firefox for me. Don't think I've ever seen that before. Super cool though! Works fine on Chromium. I liked Pass the Ball, and it was really fun contorting to avoid the red balls in Ball Dash -- if you're looking to add some games, maybe some along the lines of Twister or the Hole In the Wall game show? A whack-a-mole style game could also be interesting. Also, it'd be nice to be able to n…

Wow thanks for the heads up, will have to look into that Firefox issue.

Thank you, much appreciated! :) And great ideas as well! Whack a mole would fit perfectly

Good point, I will make the links more evident and available in every page.

On the use of other channels, I’m quite conflicted. I’m trying to optimise for ASO but it’s clearly not working, at least not without a considerable amount of reviews (who’s going to pay, even if it’s the price of a coffee) for something without any references?

I did a small test with Google ads, but it was a disaster, with every click costing around $1, which would most likely lose me money with every purchase. Not sure if that’s a valid investment.

Then social networks: reddit is already filled with vibecoded alternatives and as a user, it is really tiring to see one or two masked ads in every post. I don’t want to contribute to that. I think I could still contact some (micro)influencers to get some publicity in Instagram/TikTok, but I’m honestly so tired of that type of content that I’m not sure I want to go that way.

Sorry for the rant :)

I built my own version of Kill the Newsletter. Been testing it with various newsletters. Learning that a lot of the popular email newsletters are horrific, but if you have any, popular or ones only two people read that you like, I want to know! I also bought some steel table legs and rebuilt our kitchen table and bench yesterday. The table came with wooden legs that always seemed unstable, I would confidently stand o…

how are you solving the problem that a number of newsletter owners purge emails which are not opening/reading the emails? are you sending a signal that the email was read?

Haven't encountered that yet, but probably something I will need to solve. I started with just a few newsletters I already subscribed to with Kill the Newsletter that never had that problem, I need to research what the various sending frameworks do to track opens these days.
