Unpopular opinion, park it and turn off auto-renew. I too had a typo github domain I used for training and with some hesitation I let it go when Microsoft bought them. They have a lot of lawyers and interesting priorities. perhaps an understatement on my part...

Send (spear-) or otherwise phishing emails from that domain. Maybe with some nonsense about MX records :-D If you are careful and honest it’s not illegal. GitHub might still take the domain but if you aren’t misrepresenting anything you shouldn’t be on the hook for cybersquatting IMHO.

Did you get a cease and desist letter?

No, I did not wait for Microsoft's attention. I let that domain expire before the purchase was finalized. I've dealt with lawyers from other smaller companies and I do not enjoy the drama. Some people (some Youtubers) love expensive drama but it's just not for me.
