It's not worth it to get certs in general. As long as you can do the work, education is far down on the list when it comes to hiring. Even recruiters will tell you that these days, "Do you want someone who can do the work, or do you want someone who can memorize a few answers for a test?"

This varies highly by where you want to work. Government and adjacent places love certs.

The vast majority of gov jobs are very low skill and effort so of course they like degrees. It's a checkbox they can fall back on to say the person is "qualified."

It really depends on the reason to get a specific cert

I carry a few certs for work related to the products I most heavily work with because they:

- help ensure our partner status with those vendors

- give customers the warm fuzzies that our people actually know what they are talking about (at least to some basic level)

Experience trumps certification every day of the week ... except when it does not - breaking into a new career path can be one of those times

Most certs show you know enough basic material to pass a moderately-low bar of competency (yes, some are far harder and/or indicate a relatively-high bar of competency ... but the initial Red Hat certs are not those))

You're spot-on. IT in government is being a liaison to the vendor that does the actual work.
