- Foundation: as opposed to tutorial approach and just dropping knowledge bomb.
- Modular: as opposed to linear, monolithic book that requires you to read through 500 pages.

http://book.mixu.net/css/ is a free book you may be interested in.
Note that for the book you're looking for, modularity would require that it explicitly states the dependencies between sections. This is probably a good idea anyway.
