Regarding AD/LDAP/Kerberos, I gather it's possible to run an AD DC as part of Samba now. I haven't tried it out yet, but it looks promising.

Hopefully the argument about back/forth traffic in SSL will soon be obsolete if Zero-RTT handshakes are implemented in TLS1.3. Surely this would then be comparable to standard HTTP…
