I use FHEM ( https://fhem.de/ ) to automate my home. Its written in Perl and a bit dated, but it's small and connects with everything I have. Plus it includes a MQTT server.

You can use the go implementation of wireguard (wireguard-go). This way you don't need a kernel module. Works for me on a really cheap OpenVZ VPS since months.
