How would one set this up? Why is DNS validation needed?

IIRC, you have to enable the "strict" mode, or something along those lines, in the settings before it rejects HTTP connections from being made. I had the same issue.

For me it's the exact opposite -- always on mobile, always when logged out (haven't extensively tested being logged in on mobile, since I'm barely logged in to Twitter on mobile.)

I'd recommend the actively maintained https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface instead, which has support for newer Surface devices as well.

You can use gopass[0] for that. It's pass but with syncing capabilities. [0]: https://www.gopass.pw
