If you haven't seen it, TastySpleen Studios is working on a spiritual successor to aq2 called Midnight Guns.

This actually changed somewhat recently (I'm not sure exactly when), but I tried it the other night and was able to run k3b gui from wsl2 on win10.

Forgive my lack of knowledge of the TLDs, but is there then an alternative TLD that can/should be used for personal projects or portfolios?

No, but it rationalizes and generalizes the conversation so rather than discussing/attacking a single company, discussion can be about the greater problem and how to fix it.
