Exactly as painful as it might seem. Automated tests can only get you so far. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and dig into the code base.

I rock it old school and still prefer web.py over anything.

How does Flask compare with web.py?

Word...though I think you'd be pleased to know that Kohana is one of the better engineered PHP code bases out there.

Personally I would go for either CodeIgniter or it's more well built cousin Kohana.
