As someone who is unfamiliar with these algorithms I would love to see some benchmarks on the memory vs accuracy trade off for each.

I tried this on an iPad and 3d viewing works with the gyroscope. I got a 360 view on the summit just by spinning around on my chair sitting at home. Very cool!

If you have a kinect with a usb adapter you can try out microsoft's kinect sdk. There are a lot example apps including several 3d scanning ones (called kinectfusion I think?).
