I did a similar mod: fly my Phantom 1 with a CC3D board inside. It works perfectly fine and now i can fly acro mode at insane speeds.

The 3dr solo is probably the closest feature-wise, but it is not exactly charp compared to the phantom, neither Open Source. BTW, parrot drones really sucks. Don't even think about…

I would build a platform for the unit to sit on and a power pack for portable use.
