I interpreted it as the pain being caused by experiencing one's own perceptions and the importance is put on conceptualizing life (the experiencing) and dropping the self :)

I find the explanations more clear than other such courses. The examples are simple, sets and graphs, something that programmers can easily understand.

I'm interested in knowing of other formal, graphical modelling languages that can be executed and/or easily composed -ex: BT can using specific tools, UML can not AFAIK.
